In this lab, you conducted leg-lift exercises to explore how the availability of oxygen via rest impacts the amount of repetitions you can do. In first period, we noticed that a 10 second workout internal produced results that were fairly consistent throughout the testing which indicates that aerobic respiration was the primary mode of respiration. Enough oxygen and glucose was present in the leg muscles to allow aerobic respiration to continue. Some groups decided to drop the rest interval down to 10 and 5 seconds which reduced the number of repetitions in the second test. What would this indicate about the kind of respiration which occurs here?
For third and fourth, we decided to increase the exercise interval to 20 seconds while reducing the rest time to 10 seconds as some students suggested. The results were still fairly consistent for most the athletes in the class, but the less athletically inclined individuals (such as myself) showed some difference in the results. In either case, it is important to note that aerobic respiration was the primary process at the start of the exercises while anaerobic respiration began to kick in toward the end of the exercises as some of you noticed a bit a burning feeling by the fourth interval.
